Understanding Root Canal Basics
A root canal is a dental procedure removing inflamed and/or infected tissue from inside the nerve (pulp) chamber of the tooth. This tissue is made up of blood and lymph vessels, and nerves.

Indications of Root Canal Need:

  • Deep decay that infects the pulp of the tooth
  • Infection progression from the pulp to the surrounding bone around the root of the tooth (abscess)
  • Fractured or cracked teeth that may be symptomatic (sensitive or painful) to biting
  • Protracted sensitivity, ache, or throbbing to thermal changes – hot or cold

Steps of Root Canal Treatment

  • Step 1. First the tooth is “numbed” with an anesthetic. A dental dam is then placed on the tooth to isolate it for treatment. Access is then gained to the pulp chamber by an opening made into the tooth.
  • Step 2. Specialized small instruments are used to clean, enlarge and shape the nerve chamber of the tooth. Medicines and disinfectants are employed in the process to make sure bacteria and or infections in the tooth are eliminated.
  • Step 3. The nerve space is filled and sealed using a dental cement and bio-compatible pliable material called gutta purcha.
  • Step 4. A build-up and final restoration (crown) will be placed to restore and protect the tooth.

Why would a Root Canal Procedure Fail?

  • The patient’s body does not resolve the infection in the bone.
  • Bone infection has been latent for too long to successfully treat the tooth.
  • Patients have delayed treatment for too long.

To summarize, a root canal is a procedure to save a tooth that might otherwise need extraction. Dr. Vance explains, “When a tooth’s inner pulp becomes infected or inflamed, a root canal becomes necessary to preserve the tooth and alleviate pain. We remove the damaged tissue, thoroughly clean the area, and seal it to prevent further issues.”

Comfort Matters

Sedation is Available
We know dental anxiety can be a significant treatment barrier for patients. To help, we offer advanced sedation techniques providing comfortable, pain-free root canal treatments individualized to meet the needs of our patients.

  • Oral Sedation: a simple pill to help patients relax before and during the procedure
  • IV Sedation: to help with higher levels of anxiety, allowing patients to enter a deeply relaxed state

Our practice is committed to ensuring complete comfort throughout the procedure. “Our goal is to make your root canal experience as comfortable as possible,” says Dr. Cullen. “With sedation, patients report feeling relaxed throughout the procedure and often have little to no memory of the process.”

Expertise Matters

Our practice boasts an impressive 96% success rate for root canal treatments, significantly higher than the national average of 84%. This success is a testament to Dr. Cullen’s skill and our team’s commitment to excellence.
